Latin practices surge, but office openings lag; fragile economies and governments, easy commute, make firms hesitate
Article Abstract:
Increased business in Latin America since the 1980s with the end of dictatorships, open markets, and the privatization has led US law firms to open law offices there. Divisions in the region's legal services market cut several ways. New York law firms linked to investment banks and the stock exchanges dominate capital markets work. Washington, DC, firms do sovereign work, such as trade issues. Florida firms, with their nearness to the Miami headquarters of many large corporations' Latin operations, do private trans-border investment and trade work, and Texas firms, near Mexico, do oil-industry investment and NAFTA-related work.

How to defend clients you know are innocent
Article Abstract:
Legal literature is replete with legal scholarship on the defense of the guilty but has few guidelines for defending those clients who are innocent. Defending such clients involves an emotional burden not present in other criminal defense work. Attorneys are not representing a client but a cause, that of the truth. It seems to the attorney that truth must emerge the victor in such a case.
