Lawyers brace for countdown and out to 2000; clients seek ways to head off a 'paranoid frenzy' as computer D-Day nears
Article Abstract:
Law firms and other professions depending on computers know that software codes with dates such as payrolls, insurance policies, mortgages and other financial instruments may collapse with the year change from 1999 to 2000. In most systems, only two digits indicate a year and will read '00' to come before '99', if they read it. Some industries must invest the time and cost to fix the software now. The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Counsel requires Year 2000 Compliant Programs to be in place Dec 31, 1998, leaving an entire year for testing.

Slowly but surely, lawyers reap real returns on tech investments
Article Abstract:
Jon E Klemens, a consultant for Altman Weil Inc, surveyed 25 law firms that made wide-ranging technology overhauls between 1992 and 1996, comparing the firms' financial performance the year before a big upgrade with the year after. The firms were selected for their commitment to technology and Klemens found productivity gains across the board, as well as rises in net partner income. The technology investment seemed to pay for itself after just one year.

Intranet: a lawyer's personal internet; law firms and in-house counsel are logging onto private computer networks
Article Abstract:
Law firms and corporate counsels are making use of intranets, which are private computer networks. Intranets can be considered as personalized internets, operating the same way and for the same purposes. They save paper costs for office practices while facilitating information dissemination. They are adaptable to different needs, suitable to large or small firms and to separate or in-house legal departments.
