Strawberry growers pick off a pesticide ban
Article Abstract:
Strawberry growers in California have won the right to continue using the toxic pesticide methyl bromide until 1997. This delay halts implementation of the 1986 Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act and the 1984 Birth Defects Prevention Act. Yields are about 25% lower when strawberries are grown organically. The pesticide is the fourth leading cause of farmworker injuries in California and also damages the ozone layer. Strawberry growers are to blame for one fourth of California's methyl bromide use. One tool their lobbyists used was the threat of lost jobs, very effective in California since the downsizing of the defense industry.

Hazards of Herbicides: Loggers Risk Tomorrow's Trees
Article Abstract:
The nation's forests are being sold to timber companies by the United States Forest Service. The lumber firms are destroying more forests than will ever grow back. The policy of the Forest Service is based upon herbicide use. The Service feels that continuous spraying of the trees will increase speed of growth permitting more forests to be sold for industry. Herbicide use for increased growth has not been proven. The new high-technology forestry practice is being paid for by the taxpayer. Increased yield through intensive management is a now long practiced policy whose outcome is yet unknown.

Astroturf lobbying replaces grassroots organizing
Article Abstract:
Corporations are involved in astroturf lobbying in which they mask their interests by latching onto a grassroots organization with similar interests and supporting that organization's lobbying efforts. An association of oil refineries constituted most of the Californians Against Utility Company Abuse, which lobbied against using utility revenue to support the development of electric and natural gas vehicles. A list of other supposed grassroots organizations that are largely supported by corporations is provided. The public relations techniques of such corporations is discussed.
