Mediation can heal firms' rifts; airing disputes
Article Abstract:
Mediation can be a good way of resolving disputes in law firms through communication and compromise. Among the disputes which can be suitable for mediation are those between partners and shareholders, potential mergers, malpractice allegations and fee disputes. Mediators can be found through referrals and directories on alternative dispute resolution services, and the selection of one agreeable to both sides is the first step. The law firm's representatives at the mediation should have as much latitude as possible and should be senior enough to have an influence on the decision.

Setting up a strong referral network takes a consistent, firmwide effort
Article Abstract:
Referral networks are an important marketing tool for law firms but the information they provide must be organized in a readily accessible manner. Some law firms organize referral sources by legal specialties. New client forms should make note of referral sources and the reasons for referrals from other lawyers. The referral source's profession and target market can be indicated by code. Software marketing packages to help organize the information are also available.

Integrated approach has merits; firmwide plan
Article Abstract:
All components of a law firm's marketing program should be integrated with other areas of the firm, such as administration, practice development and services. Comprehensive marketing research is essential once an overall goal has been decided on, as are compensation systems which reward effective marketing. Marketing plans should be coordinated at the law firm, the practice specialty and the individual levels.
