New domain name regimes may be doomed by disarray, discord
Article Abstract:
Proposed changes of the Internet's Policy Oversight Committee, seated in Geneva, include allowing membership of Internet service providers and increasing numbers from 11 to 20, although some are skeptical that additional members will give the body added authority. Network Solutions Inc, the US registrar of Internet domain names, is to give up its domain name responsibilities on Mar 31, 1998, and new registries are to begin handling added top-level domain names such as "-store" and "-firm."

National laws entangle the 'Net: it's a small, small litigious Web
Article Abstract:
The Georgia Institute of Technology in 1997 was sued in a French court for offering on information about its French programs only in English, thereby violating a 1994 law requiring sites offering services in the country to be in French. Luckily for the Georgia school, the Tribunal de Police de Paris dismissed the suit, although only on procedural grounds. In late May 1997, there was a similar suit in Quebec.
