Nominee's mettle will be tested soon; next term: abortion protests, civil rights
Article Abstract:
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, federal appellate court judge and President Bill Clinton's nominee for the Supreme Court seat to be vacated by Justice Byron White, is thought to be a centrist who is committed to such constitutional principles as abortion rights, affirmative action and the separation of church and state. She became a strong advocate of women's rights early in her career as the counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund who argued a number of women's rights cases before the Supreme Court. In 1980 she became a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit.

New trio stands up to Court's hard right
Article Abstract:
US Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O'Connor, Anthony Kennedy and David Souter have surprised both liberals and conservatives with their exhibition of a more moderate viewpoint than Justices Scalia, Thomas and White and Chief Justice Rehnquist. This moderate bloc was most apparent in cases involving school prayer and abortion. Their focus seems to be on maintaining stare decisis, the continuation of decisions made by prior Courts.

Clinton's chance to remake Court; as White steps down
Article Abstract:
Justice Byron R. White's has announced his retirement from the US Supreme Court at the end of the 1992-93 term, handing Bill Clinton his first opportunity to appoint someone to that bench. Clinton is known to be pro-choice and is likely to appoint someone who shares his views. The choice will probably also be someone who can stem the Court's conservative swing in church-state and civil rights issues.
