Non-traditionals' surge in new legal market
Article Abstract:
Large law firms' most dramatic change in recent years has been the dramatic rise in the numbers of attorneys who are neither partners nor associates. The 250 largest firms have 4,499 such lawyers, up 47% from 3,062 in 1990, as well as 44 classifications, up from 26. Firms want to remain flexible and avoid getting more partners than they need, while keeping costs down to satisfy clients. Also, it now takes longer, up to 15 years, for lawyers' peers to reach the level where they make referrals.

Legal market: the good and the bad prospects for job hunters
Article Abstract:
A survey was conducted to identify demand for legal specialties in different regions of the U.S. Respondents included managing partners, hiring partners, legal recruiters and legal consultants. The responses are listed by region, then by state, with the specialties identified as hot, warm, warming, cooling and cold by each respondent. Practice areas for in-house counsel are listed separately.

Article Abstract:
Employment opportunities for attorneys by region of the country are listed. Under the headings of 'hot,' 'warm,' and 'cool,' employment opportunities in various legal practice areas which fit these headings are listed. Names of recruiters who provided this information are also listed. The National Law Journal interviewed these recruiters in July 1998.
