On the edge of chaos
Article Abstract:
Michael Wilens has been appointed as the West Group's first Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Wilens maintains that his new title makes him responsible for transforming technology from its critical support state into practical business and revenue growth. He distinguishes his CTO title as being different from a CIO title. Sun Microsystems' CIO, for example, is responsible for ensuring that the company can construct computers efficiently and that customers gain superior service and similar functions. Sun's CTO, however, is responsible for creating new product ideas and product enhancements that will spur revenue growth. Wilens asserts that West's software enabling strategy will enable other vendors' applications to seamlessly access West's content. He maintains that West is committed to pursuing better search engines and that billing represents one of biggest challenges that West has encountered in providing component-type products.

Filing with EDGAR Ease
Article Abstract:
Document Technologies' $895 EDGAR Ease for Windows greatly simplifies the task of filing documents with the SEC'S Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval (EDGAR) system. Users first create their 8-Ks, 10-Ks, 10-Qs or other SEC documents on a word processor, then import the documents to EDGAR Ease simply by choosing 'Import' from the file menu and specifying the word processor used to create the document. EDGAR Ease then searches for errors in the document and returns an error description line. By double-clicking on the line, users bring up more details on the error and how to fix it. The editing tool makes it extremely easy to correct errors, and it offers many of the standard features found on word processors. After the correction process, EDGAR Ease rechecks the document and adds the required tags, along with a detailed header and other data required by EDGAR. The final document can be sent off with a mouse click.

Question & answer with Brian Hall
Article Abstract:
West Information Publishing Group (WIPG) Pres Brian Hall says that the $3.45 billion spent by Thomson Legal Publishing to acquire West Publishing will allow his company to offer improved products and services. WIPG now oversees the operations of both West Publishing and Thomson Legal. Hall claims that the acquisition will not raise prices or hurt competition in the industry, and he also believes that WIPG's improved products will force others to improve their quality, benefitting the entire market. Hall states that technologies such as desktop publishing make it easier than ever for small companies to enter the market, and he does not foresee any further consolidation within the industry. Hall says the company believes the price it paid for West was fair. Hall defends the company's practice of creating awards for the judiciary and legal professions, saying it is the company's way of investing in its industry.
