Mood swings; D'Alemberte recalls presidential year of political ups and downs
Article Abstract:
Outgoing ABA pres Talbot D'Alemberte's 1991-1992 presidential year had both disappointments and successes. Dealing with the Bush administration was frustrating to him, as he received no support from Bush when he visited Congress to lobby for court system improvements and Bush declined to support additional funding for the Legal Services Corp. D'Alemberte's success was the efforts of the ABA Central and East European Law Initiative, an attempt to help East European countries develop democratic legal systems.

Boalt Hall settles with government; California law school to re-evaluate "clumsy" minority admissions policy
Article Abstract:
The Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights has directed the University of California's Boalt Hall Law School to rework its admission policy to make sure there is no reverse discrimination. Boalt's goals since 1978 have been to admit 8-10% Afro-Americans, 8-10% Hispanics, 5-7% Asians and 1% American Indians. Boalt has said the school will no longer make race a factor in choosing from the waiting list or give all applications from one minority group to one admissions team.
