Ariz. courts introduce automated legal help
Article Abstract:
QuickCourt is an automated court system started in Arizona on Jun 23, 1993. The system gives people legal information and helps them fill out court documents, giving them the completed forms to file with a court clerk. The system is similar to an earlier program in Colorado and can operate in areas including simple divorces, small claims, judgment collection and landlord-tenant disputes. Lawyers do not fear a loss of business because of this service, stating that the sort of clientele who uses it could probably not afford a private lawyer.

The new chain gang: states' new 'get tough' prison policies are gaining support from politicians and the courts
Article Abstract:
Efforts to cut back on the amenities and supposed comforts of prisons in many states have some experts warning of a return to the conditions that sparked the 1971 Attica prison riot. In the wake of that event the federal courts took a more active interest in prison conditions, but recent Supreme Court decisions may reduce their ability to intervene. Some prison authorities welcome the chance to exercise their own judgment more often, but many officials say rehabilitation suffers along with the prisoners.
