Patent, trademark data bases to appear online; lawyers yawn
Article Abstract:
The US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) has announced that by the end of 1998 the full text of 2 mil patents, dating back to 1976, as well as the text and images of 800,000 trademarks, will be available on the World Wide Web. At 20 mil pages long, this will be the largest electronic library of patent and trademark data available free, on the Internet. New tech helps curb legal fees; providers are devising techniques to assist corporate secretaries and in-house lawyers in managing law firms
Article Abstract:
Technological innovations can lead to reduced legal fees in the hands of skilled in-house attorneys and corporate secretaries. Programs such as DefenseNet help both outside and in-house counsel track litigation and project costs. Sharing of work product and documents has become another way to cut costs. In-house attorneys have begun to use technology to manage outside counsel and keep control of the related fees.
