Perspectives on White: a roundtable
Article Abstract:
The difficulty in categorizing Byron White has led to some of the dismissive press articles about him after he announced his retirement from the US Supreme Court. His loyalty was to the institution of the court rather than to his place in history. This stance played a role in his decision not to use his tenure to articulate a vision. Because of his respect for the structure of government and the separation of powers, he deferred to the other branches in his decisions. His decisions showed a pragmatic, case-by-case approach.

The reluctant justice; Lewis F. Powell Jr. personified the 'quality of attentiveness.'
Article Abstract:
The late Lewis F. Powell was the ideal Supreme Court justice, moderate, careful and flexible. He served on the court from 1972 until his retirement in 1987. Powell modeled for all his clerks an approach to the practice of law built on collegiality and hard work. Powell's temperament and his experience made him an idealist, viewing the legal profession at its best as composed of people trained to facilitate mutual understanding and develop practical solutions for difficult problems.

Remembering Harry Blackmun; three 'family' members recall their ex-boss and lifelong mentor
Article Abstract:
Former employees of the late US Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun describe a man of quiet demeanor, always polite to others, hard-working but humble about his accomplishments, and with great attention to detail. Blackmun was compassionate but had a dry, self-deprecating wit. Blackmun will go down in history as the author of the Roe v. Wade opinion, but his life in the law consisted of more than that case.
