Pres. George W. Bush's attempt to limit the ABA role in screening judicial nominations is discussed. Several key Democratic senators still want the ABA input, and ABA Pres Martha Barnett states that the peer review and rating will continue.

The call by an ABA commission for public financing of judicial campaigns. This would stem the tide of increasingly expensive issue advocacy television advertisements portraying judges as the spokesmen for special interests. The cost of state supreme court campaigns has increased 62% from 1998.

A conservative juggernaut; judicial attacks push debate to right, put Hatch in middle
Article Abstract:
Sen Orrin Hatch, the chairman of the US Senate Judiciary Committee, announced in Feb 1997 an end to the ABA's official advice to the Senate on judicial nominations. The decision marked a shift from past statements praising the association for thoroughness while saying he did not always like the conclusions. Hatch left intact the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary's power to screen candidates for the executive branch and only decreased their impact on the Senate's public hearings.
