The wonder of Windows: a look at upgrading to Windows 2000 and utilities you can use
Article Abstract:
Upgrading to Microsoft's Windows 2000 operating system is most appropriate for those using Windows NT 4.0. Those using Windows 95 might find that their equipment is too old to work efficiently with Windows 2000, and those using Windows 98 Server Edition or Millennium Edition probably do not need an upgrade. For windows 2000, a 'clean install' is recommended, rather than Microsoft's in-place upgrade process.

Power vs. usability: choosing a Windows database
Article Abstract:
A comparison of Microsoft's Access for Windows 2.0, Novell's Paradox 5.0 and Lotus' Approach relational databases reveals that Access offers users the best merging of power and usability. Constructing the database is fairly straightforward in Access and Approach, while Paradox is awkward, requiring users to search through a list of data types to assign the file type. Linking the fields in two different data tables again proves more difficult in Paradox than the other two. Access handles creating a form for data entry best, preventing unauthorized users from changing the final form. Access assembles the responses generated by queries into a temporary table that may be sorted a variety of ways. Although Access's queries are slightly more difficult to formulate, the temporary table allows greater searching flexibility. Access gives users security options for tables, forms, reports, queries and macros, unlike the other two which protect the database only.

Fixing Window pains
Article Abstract:
Windows 95 or 98 will eventually become unstable and require troubleshooting on the part of the user. One of the best solutions to these problems is to switch to another operating system, preferably Windows 2000. A second option is to separate the Internet Explorer (IE) browser from Windows; the integration of IE with the operating system is the cause of much of Windows' instability. The forthcoming Service Pack for Windows 98 is supposed to fix many of the stability problems, although it remains untested. Until it is tested, staying with Win 95 Service Release 2.0 is the better choice.
