Predatory pricing and 'fortress hubs': monopolization in the airline industry
Article Abstract:
Competition within the airline industry creates price reductions as evidenced by the reaction of the major airlines to ValuJet entering their markets. The increase in prices where no competing 'discounters' exist shows that the inverse is also true. Department of Transportation decisions repeatedly favor the major airlines' requests and positions which do not encourage competition in the public interest.

Strengthening DOT's guidelines on predatory pricing in the airline industry: an optional 'safe harbor' remedy
Article Abstract:
The author suggests an Optional Safe Harbor method of dealing with price cutting tactics of large airlines, which tactics the author argues are instituted to eliminate competition from smaller start-up airlines. This method would be in addition to traditional remedies available through the U.S. Dept. of Transportation.
