Questions of independence: criticism, political matters heat up judges conference
Article Abstract:
A March 1996 conference of state and federal appellate judges examined problems of growing caseloads, shifting jurisdictions, and criticism of judges, all facing the US judiciary. Former Senator Warren Rudman advised lobbying Congress more actively, though others advised against it and said the problem was too complex for that to help much. The conference, called 'The Community of Courts: The Compleat Appellate Judge,' also featured widespread commentary on political criticism of Judge Harold Baer Jr.

A duffel bag of controversy for judge; jurist reverses his criticized decision to bar drug evidence stashed in luggage
Article Abstract:
Opinions about federal district Judge Harold Baer Jr.'s reversal on the propriety of a search in a drug seizure ruling continue to be voiced. Baer initially ruled that fleeing from the police was not necessarily probably cause for a search and seizure in view of documented police corruption. Much hue and cry by law and order advocates followed and the judge reversed his ruling. Politics aside, legal experts differ on whether the original ruling had a basis in precedent.

License to kill? Panelists advocate mercy, not violence
Article Abstract:
Womens' bar associations sponsored a panel discussion at the 1993 ABA Midyear Meeting focusing on the fact that self-defense laws do not deal adequately with battered women who kill their abusers. The discussion noted that testimony about battered women's syndrome did not start appearing at trial until the 1980s and that even such testimony does not guarantee a fair trial.
