Tragedy alters lobbyist's views; damages capped for tort reformer injured by malpractice
Article Abstract:
Former insurance industry lobbyist Frank Cornelius has lived to rue the day he helped get tort reform in Indiana passed. The law which he lobbied for included caps on medical malpractice damages. Fourteen years after the law was passed, Cornelius himself was a victim of medical malpractice when he suffered infections and several subsequent complications after arthroscopic knee surgery. Cornelius had to settle for damages far lower than he thought he deserved due to damages caps he helped pass.

A classic battle of lobbyists: tort reform adversaries trade charges, appeal to emotions
Article Abstract:
The Public Citizen, opposing tort reform, and the American Tort Reform Assn are charging each other with overspending on lobbyists on the issue. Opponents of tort reform charge that the effort is being supported by big business and violates federalism by undermining states' ability to regulate tort law. Supporters believe that trial lawyers are funding politicians to block tort reform to save their jobs and point to the 43 states that have already passed tort reform laws.
