Retirement planning and the cost of long-term care: battling the fear of the unknown
Article Abstract:
Most Americans recognize that long-term care is a problem when planning for their financial futures but few truly understand what long-term care involves. Do-it-yourself financial planning through books or software is common, but neither of these techniques provides adequate understanding of long-term care needs and of available options, such as insurance or reverse mortgages. Financial gerontology practitioners and educators need to actively educate the public concerning long-term care to change the fear into planning for the eventuality.

Employee benefits and the retirement decision
Article Abstract:
Loss of employee benefits should be taken into account in retirement decisions. Health insurance could be an important factor when considering early retirement, since Medicare eligibility does not begin until age 65. Employers may offer some continuation of health insurance support as an inducement to retire early. Replacement costs of other benefits such as college tuition assistance for children also need to be considered.
