Rich country, poor country: competition the mother of affluence, monopoly the sire of poverty
Article Abstract:
Economists and political scientists debate the relationship between democracy and monopoly on theoretical and practical levels. Some believe a country's economic prosperity and per capita income is dependent upon entrepreneurship which creates competition. Some believe that political democracy is not a necessary antecedent to competition and prosperity. The realities of China, Russia, and Zaire enlighten and complicate theoretical speculations.
