Running a small firm; three profiles in profitable management
Article Abstract:
Small law firms share a more informal management style than the bureaucracy of larger firms, but their other characteristics may differ. Wall and Shoun of Charleston, South Carolina, has four lawyers who decided to leave a larger firm in favor of the informality of their own. Coey, Bennett and Carlson of Elyria, Ohio has always been small. The firm has been successful in spite of the economic downturn in the Rust Belt area of Ohio where it is located. Knox Ricksen of Oakland, California has grown to 29 attorneys from a start of four and is the product of a merger between two smaller firms.

Opening the mind's eye
Article Abstract:
Changes in the legal profession have made creativity a vital element of good lawyering, though few large firms have learned to foster it effectively. As well as heightened competition and rapid technological evolution, pressure from the real-estate and financial industries is forcing lawyers to develop more innovative roles and approaches. Creativity consultants have thrived for years in corporate America, and now they are learning how to adapt their message to a profession known for its linear approach and rigid training.

Article Abstract:
Halpert, Weston, Wuori and Sawusch, a plaintiffs personal injury firm in Michigan that puts healing and compassion before profits and ego, is beloved by clients whom it serves in a broad and holistic way.
