Justice Dept. reportedly changes tack vs. tobacco; easier-to-prove allegations of fraud and misconduct are said to be new probe focus
Article Abstract:
The federal criminal probe of the tobacco industry has shifted from an inquiry into whether industry executives committed perjury to a broader focus of corporate fraud and misconduct. Joseph E. DiGenova, a former US attorney, observed that perjury was difficult to prove and a broader prosecution might be better for this reason. The US Justice Dept and various tobacco companies did not comment on the reported shift.

Plaintiffs hope for more cracks in the tobacco wall; historic settlement a first, but some caution that it may not affect other cases
Article Abstract:
Plaintiffs' lawyers fighting tobacco companies hope that the settlement of the Liggett Group Inc. of its part of the Castano nicotine addiction class action suit portends further settlements by defendant tobacco companies. The details of the settlement available indicate that states would receive some compensation for the past and future expenses of treating smoking-related illnesses.
