Seeking a wider role: underrepresented in high-level law positions, Hispanics struggle for access
Article Abstract:
Hispanic attorneys are underrepresented in the high-level positions at law firms despite significant educational opportunities afforded baby boomers. The Hispanic National Bar Assn is grateful for those who continue to support equitable representation but is concerned about growing anti-immigrant, anti-progressive and anti-affirmative action public sentiment. Hispanics are mainly living in poor, hostile environments and, as the public turns away from assisting minorities, are unlikely to be able to attain equitable representation in professions such as law.

Return of the problem-solvers: the profession needs to focus on helping people, not just fighting battles
Article Abstract:
Attorneys need to remember that the goals of the legal profession are to seek truth and give clients a fair representation in a justice quest. Most attorneys are too wrapped up in the glamourization of litigation and courtroom practice to address their clients' true needs for problem-solving. Therefore, the legal profession needs to be reoriented to focus on problem-solving and helping clients using all available remedies rather than automatically entering into a courtroom conflict.

The art of getting paid: telephone reminders and credit card options can boost cash flow
Article Abstract:
The difficulty in convincing clients to pay their legal bills can be partially resolved by accepting credit card payments and gently reminding clients of 30-day-old bills over the phone. These techniques can also serve to indicate clients who are likely to be billing problems before too much time is invested in the case. Another way to prevent billing problems involves an escrowed fee advance rather than accepting a retainer.
