Sharp debate on surveillance law; pick between two little words makes a big difference
Article Abstract:
The amendments being considered to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 under consideration by Congress after the World Trade Center and Pentagon Attacks of 2001 is discussed. Congress's consideration of this bill renews a debate oon the line between information gathered for intelligence purposes and for criminal prosecutions.

The covert searches authorized by the Antiterrorism Act of 2001 is discussed. There was no statutory authorization for covert searches prior to this law, which will likely cause litigation.

Set to spike at the High Court; theis lawyer/volleyball player's suit might vastly expand Title IX's reach
Article Abstract:
National Collegiate Athletic Ass'n v. Smith is a Title IX sex discrimination challenge slated for oral arguments in the US Supreme Court on Jan 20, 1999, and Renee Smith, a lawyer/volleyball player, hopes the 3d Circuit ruling that the NCAA can be sued even though it does not receive federal funds will be upheld. The NCAA counters this would mean many private organizations whose members receive federal dollars might also face such liability. The NCAA challenge is the second Title IX case of the Supreme Court's 1998-99 term.
