Legal aid lawyers roll dice with new lawsuit; LSC officials fear angry congressional reaction
Article Abstract:
Lawyers for the US Legal Services Corp (LSC) are contending with Velazquez v. Legal Services Corp that new restrictions on federal funding through the LSC constitute constitutional violations of the freedom of speech and association and equal protection provisions as well as of the First, Fifth and 10th Amendments. The suit goes beyond Legal Aid Society of Hawaii v. Legal Services Corp., which just uses a First Amendment argument to challenge limits on private funds.
