Small claims; why does the Court take on those "little" cases?
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court's reasons for granting certiorari in some cases can be difficult to figure out. Among possible reasons are a belief that a case involves a key constitutional questions which has not been addressed before and the need to resolve a split in the circuits which has led to unclear policy. In difficult economic times the Court may hear more bankruptcy cases. Some observers feel that the Court decides too many questions of fact and that another appellate court between the Supreme Court and the circuit courts should be created.

The calculus of rationality; reviewing the sentencing guidelines
Article Abstract:
The Federal Sentencing Guidelines, meant to make sentencing more consistent, have been challenged as unconstitutional and criticized both as being too strict and too loose. The Supreme Court, while upholding their constitutionality, has issued only narrow opinions on cases involving the guidelines. The controversial nature of the guidelines and the Sentencing Commission have ensured a steady stream of appeals. Future appeals are likely to be concerned with constitutionality, statutory compliance and issues the commission has neglected.

Guessing game; who would Clinton nominate to the Supreme Court?
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton will have the opportunity to fill many vacancies on the federal courts and probably a few on the US Supreme Court as well. Since he is a president interested in diversity, factors such as race and gender will play a role. Clinton will have the most lasting impact on the courts if he selects younger people. Possibilities include current judges like Steven Breyer, Judith Kaye and Abner Mikva; law professors like Lawrence Tribe and politicians like Mario Cuomo.
