Small office power protection
Article Abstract:
American Power Conversion's $179 Back-UPS Office UPS provides low-cost surge and power protection in a convenient package. The device sports six outlets, all of which provide surge protection and filtering. Half of the outlets also offer battery-based back-up power, and these outlets should be used for the PC and monitor. Peripherals including scanners, printers and fax machines should plug into the remaining outlets. In a power failure, the battery power for both computer and monitor lasts between five and 10 minutes for a Pentium-based system, between seven and 21 minutes for a Macintosh Performa and between 14 and 21 minutes for a 486-based system. The device notifies users when the battery power is in use, giving them time to save information and close files. A Check Battery indicator alerts users to worn out or old batteries about six to eight weeks before a battery failure. Back-UPS Office comes with a policy guaranteeing protection for up to $25,000 worth of equipment.
