Banking on fear
Article Abstract:
US banks had to write off many bad loans in the mid-1980s due to causes starting with a collision of tight monetary policy leading to high interest rates and the Reagan administration's deregulation agenda. The 1987 Savings and Loan Association Bailout Crisis was caused by many more financial failures than frauds, but overzealous banking regulators have still managed to foster a culture of fear and of massive consequences for technical errors.
