Strife after death for King of Torts; lawyers wrangle over Melvin Belli's estate in probate and bankruptcy courts
Article Abstract:
The late attorney Melvin M. Belli continues to cause controversy after death. In Dec 1995 he filed for bankruptcy to resolve almost $60 mil in debts he claimed stemmed from a prior divorce. The result of the bankruptcy case will determine how hundreds of cases pending at the time of Belli's death are distributed. There is also a will contest by son Caesar Belli, who contends a will leaving wife Nancy Ho Belli much of Melvin's wealth and excluding Caesar was executed with undue influence from Nancy after Belli suffered an incapacitating stroke.
