Article Abstract:
Dan Quayle's use of questionable statistics in his attack on legal costs and the magnitude of litigation illustrates the lack of a single authoritative source for such statistics. There are several organizations that specialize in legal statistical data: the National Center for State Courts, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the Federal Judicial Center. But no specific body is charged with compiling comprehensive data, leaving the legal community without sufficient ammunition to defend itself against arguments based on inaccurate statistics.

Article Abstract:
Gunplay in big-city schools is creating liability problems for school districts. The New York City Board of Education is being sued for $20 million, charged with failing to protect two students murdered at a New York, NY, high school on Feb 26, 1992. Ironically, Schools' use of metal detectors and other security measures raises the possibility that they could be held responsible when those measures fail, but schools would not be held liable if nothing was done to prevent guns on school grounds.

Article Abstract:
Steven Smotrich was one of five top executives of Princeton/Newport Partners L.P. who were convicted in 1988 for tax violations of RICO. The federal government later dropped all charges after the convictions were reversed on appeal. In fact the prosecution of Smotrich and his colleagues was an example of how overzealous prosecutors can misuse federal racketeering laws. RICO is a vague law that makes simple oversights into 'crimes.' The case had a devastating effect on Smotrich's life.
