A new era for the ABA: bar group's first female president to take office faces a decline in membership
Article Abstract:
The American Bar Assn's annual meeting in Aug 1995 featured the passing of the organization's presidency to the first woman ever to hold the post, Roberta Cooper Ramo. Notable events also included the release of one study on standards for accrediting law schools, and another on non-lawyers competing independently for legal work. Ramo and her predecessor, George Bushnell, are different in many striking ways, but agree on the importance of funding for the Legal Services Corp and on worries about declining ABA membership.

Law student hangs jury; the holdout in an 8-1 vote, a Harvard 3L, stymies $350 million class action
Article Abstract:
Law student Lisa Reifenberg was the only juror holding out in a $350 mil class action alleging fraud by ICN Pharmaceuticals for misleading statements about the possible effectiveness of its HIV drug, Virazole and she caused a jury deadlock. Reifenberg felt the company's false statements were immaterial due to the 'truth on the marketplace' doctrine. ICN's attorneys declared victory, while plaintiff's attorneys vowed to seek a new trial.
