Technology innovators place emphasis on patents to protect their technology and face less hostile judicial audience in multiple suits involving wireless technology, online distribution methods, web developments, and e-commerce techniques. Two high profile patent-related suits involve NTP Inc. and Research In Motion (RIM), maker of the Black Berry handheld, for patents related to wireless systems transmitting e-mail, and RIM and Good Technology for patent related to always-on e-mail access.

Prolific patents: the USPTO grapples with alternative patent filing procedures as application backlog builds
Article Abstract:
The U.S. patent and Trademark Office receives about 250000 patent applications in a year but a few of them are received from applicants who use their own computer to file patent documents electronically. With the current backlog, the USPTO takes about 27 months for an application to be processed but if the problem is not taken care of then it might get worse.
