The exploitation of Mexican workers
Article Abstract:
The labor theory of value concept could help alleviate the economic inequality and injustice seen today in Mexico. That theory, promulgated by both Karl Marx and Adam Smith, considers labor to be the unit of account for economic production, and hence paramount over capital. Capital owners thus have an obligation to use that capital to benefit society, as in providing a living wage and progressive benefits for the workers who are not presently paid commensurately for the worth of their labor.

Layoff lingo: corporations sugarcoat mass firings
Article Abstract:
The use of euphemisms instead of the term 'layoff' does not really hide the fact that people are being fired. Reasons for the large layoffs are often the desire for higher corporate profits and higher executive salaries. Laid-off employees in their fifties will likely face age discrimination when trying to find other employment. Knowledge of what corporations are up to is leading to a backlash which may culminate in regulation similar to the plant closing notification law of 1988.

Competitiveness, wages, and corporate responsibility
Article Abstract:
An ethical social contract is needed between workers and companies, based on the idea employers must pay reasonable wages that reflect the economic value of the employees' work. Competitiveness cannot be used as an ethical justification for reducing wages. Moral arguments can be made that the maquiladora assembly plant employees should receive raises based on their increased productivity and as a response to the devaluation of the peso.
