Countdown to controversy; Ethics 2000 recommendations are not likely to make everyone happy
Article Abstract:
Highlights of the Ethics 2000 project to be presented at the ABA National Conference on Professional Responsibility in June 2000 are discussed. Included are ethical standards governing multidisciplinary partnerships, some of the standards governing expert evidence, and lawyer-client confidentiality.

The final report of the ABA's Ethics 2000 Commission was released in Nov 2000 and contained proposals for revisions to the organization's Model Rules of Professional Conduct. Controversial proposals include the one for discretionary disclosure of client confidences to prevent substantial bodily harm and safe harbors facilitating legal practice across state lines.

Let the debate begin; report on ABA ethics rules is ready for the House
Article Abstract:
Some of the potentially controversial proposals in the Ethics 2000 report are discussed, and these include the potential broadening of the reasons for discretionary disclosure of a client's confidences and a proposed requirement that all conflict-of-interest waivers and fee agreements be in writing.
