The private Lachs: life as art
Article Abstract:
International Court of Justice Judge Manfred Lachs devoted his life to shaping international law. He treated the international legal system as more than a body of rules, and can be seen as an artist building upon doctrine by interpreting new situations in light of previous precedent. As a judge, he was more interested in persuasion and consensus, and did not try to impose the rule of international law in ideological or impractical terms.
