The shifting sands of free speech; as private interests enlist constitutional protection, 'liberal' support wanes
Article Abstract:
The Rehnquist Supreme Court continues to grapple with freedom of speech cases, but the reluctance of liberals to champion its rulings shows a shift in emphasis in high court free speech rulings. Free speech cases today tend to deal with whether this constitutional right applies to the unlimited use of political campaign funds, or to business and industry's pursuit of its interests. The political case during the 1995-96 term was Colorado Republican Federal Campaign Committee v. Federal Election Commission, while the business case was 44 Liquormart, Inc., v. Rhode Island.
