Tracking the big bucks: selecting a timekeeping, billing and accounting system for your large firm
Article Abstract:
Sophisticated timekeeping, billing and accounting (TB&A) systems for large legal firms are beginning to appear on the market. Such systems can reduce operating costs, especially if they are based on common, proven and popular operating systems, such as Windows NT or UNIX. Microsoft's SQL Server 6.0 is becoming a standard backend database. They can give attorneys and clients ready access to time and money accounting information, especially if they have a Windows-like interface for ease of use and reduced support costs. Systems with small, undemanding client software will reduce hardware upgrade expenditures. TB&A systems with sophisticated reporting capabilities can add value by providing for data modeling and executive information systems. Some also allow billing functions to be distributed to secretaries, and some even support the Uniform Task Based Management System.

Establishing a strategic technology plan in 1997
Article Abstract:
Law firms must develop strategic technology plans to maximize their chances of success and to appropriately spend allocated funds. A firm's business success is primarily determined by annual implementations of updated technology strategies. To establish working plans towards success, firms should attempt to maintain between three and six IS directional statements. Some suggestions for outlining significant aspects of proposed initiatives include improving system usability, connectivity, security, long term cost reduction, cost supervision and mechanics of how proposed plans will be executed. Firms should address expenses and focus on structural operating costs. The most important ingredient in a successful system plan is the firms detailed written commitment.

Strategic thinking
Article Abstract:
Law firms are perhaps better suited for the 'Information Revolution' than any other knowledge-based business. This is because legal professionals work with knowledge explicitly, and therefore have more needs for storage, manipulation and processing. Those law firms choosing not to modernize face extinction, but there is already a growing information underclass in those offices that only upgrade their systems with a feast/famine mentality. The best strategy to follow is Perpetual Systems Evolution (PSE), which calls for an ongoing investment in information systems. With the growing connectivity of the business world, forward-thinking firms can use telecommunications technology to maximize profits, rather than relying on an outdated hourly billing paradigm.
