Slowdown strategies: wise use of time during lulls in work can fortify a practice
Article Abstract:
The time available when a solo practice experiences a lull in business can be put to good use by catching up on bookkeeping, networking on the Internet or contacting former and potential clients. Professional interests can also be pursued during slowdowns that may lead to expanded business. Another important task that is better performed when attorneys are not busy trying cases is the practice's cash flow management. Other suggestions are included that demonstrate how business lulls can be valuable.

The heart of the matter
Article Abstract:
Attorneys are in a people-oriented profession and must be good communicators and listeners. Patricia Dean, Chicago-area consultant to attorneys on interpersonal skills, suggests that attorneys anticipate what will be covered before a meeting so that they can better concentrate on listening to what is being said. Other skills include not interrupting at important points, listening through pauses in interviews and not showing boredom or lack of interest through nonverbal behavior.
