Troubled firms must act fast; Chicago's beleaguered Keck Mahin waited too long for turnaround help
Article Abstract:
Keck, Mahin & Cate of Chicago waited too long before calling in Development Specialists Inc. to assist in its reorganization. Pophaim, Haik, Schnobrich & Kaufman, similarly denied the extent of their problems in the management of their law practice before the remaining attorneys in its firm were absorbed by Hinshaw & Culbertson. Turnaround experts are used to dealing with organizations that fail to admit the extent of their mismanagement. The peculiarities of law firm management structures, less familiar to turnaround experts, complicate the challenges of reorganization.

Fax services can handle multiple transmissions
Article Abstract:
Fax service bureaus offer less expensive and often faster, higher-quality transmission services than most law firms have in-house, but the service should be carefully evaluated first. Such bureaus can easily send a fax to multiple recipients, at a specified time, using customized elements merged into the transmission. They can keep a standard text on file, as well as address lists. They work best for sending multi-page documents to several receivers. Those evaluating a service should consider quality, size, references, and services.

Research is vital when pursuing a new market
Article Abstract:
Law firms seeking to enter new markets should start the process by doing market research. Such research can give a firm an idea of where it stands in relation to the market before spending too much time and money. Research should determine the state of the industry, possible competition, the needs of the potential clients and the firm's potential commitment. Techniques for conducting research and sources of information are discussed.
