Unequal loyalty
Article Abstract:
Federal public defenders must sometimes choose between antagonizing the judges who appoint them and their clients, creating a potential conflict of interest. New Mexico former public defender Tova Indritz chose her clients when forced to make a choice and so was not reappointed after a 13-year tenure despite an excellent reputation. Critics propose various alternatives to the current appointment system including a nonprofit organization to appoint and pay public defenders with federal money. Indritz supports judges' involvement because of their funding efforts for public defenders.

Courtesy is its own reward; lawyers need to treat others with respect or face the consequences
Article Abstract:
Most discussions of the decline in civility in legal practice are in terms of professionalism and of said decline's impact on the public perception of attorneys, but a tactic of lessened civility also hurts business because people tend to treat others the way they are treated. Moreover, people are accustomed to an emphasis on customer service nowadays and their options in choosing legal services are greater than ever.

Running bases, winning cases; why the grand old game of baseball is much like the legal profession
Article Abstract:
The practice of law resembles the game of baseball in many ways. Both honor the past and depend on rules and regulations. In baseball, as in the law, social wrongs have come right. In the sport, this has happened with the success of players of color. Both depend on teamwork and on fair play. Both have been charged recently with greed and arrogance. Both lawyers and baseball players must lose with grace and dignity.
