Watch your back on referrals: check out the other attorney first, then put arrangement in writing
Article Abstract:
An attorney who refers a client to another lawyer runs the risk of being sued for malpractice or other causes based on the actions of the other working attorney. For example, an allegation of a joint venture between two lawyers can be the basis of a malpractice action or negligent referral action. Referring attorneys can protect themselves by checking on complaints against other attorneys, verifying liability insurance and experience of referred-to attorneys, and creating a clear division of labor between themselves and the other attorneys.

Yes: monopolizing the market serves no one
Article Abstract:
The time has come for the legal profession to accept that some legal functions can be performed by nonlawyers and that letting paralegals perform such functions will improve access to the judicial system with little or no risk to quality. Some form of regulation of these paralegals is all that is necessary to protect consumers. The bar must accept this change as inevitable in view of other developments such as legal self-help books.

Taking brief time for writing: lawyer-authors lose sleep, give up hobbies for craft
Article Abstract:
Attorney-authors have different ways of making time for their writing. Louis Begley writes only on weekends and eschews non-fiction because of the research time required. Daniel Kornstein tries to make time whenever he can. Marissa Piesman does some writing during her commute on New York subways. These tips came out at a New York County Lawyers Assn program on attorney-authors in Jan 1995.
