White & Case: growing pains; firm chairman's costly overseas expansion plan is key focus of irritation
Article Abstract:
James B. Hurlock, the chairman of New York City's White & Case, has a management style which has enabled the law firm to grow quickly and to build a global network, but his near-total lack of interest in input from his partners has caused high-profile defections. The number of White & Case lawyers has increased from 50 to 750 since 1994 and the firm boasts 30 offices in 24 countries. More than a dozen top rainmakers and producers have left since 1995. Remaining partners divide themselves into two camps, those sharing Hurlock's vision and the loyal opposition.

Getting those in-house jobs; traits prized by law firms are exactly those that companies eschew
Article Abstract:
Successful and high-ranking attorneys in the private sector may have a hard time when looking for corporate counsel jobs. The two areas of legal work value different skills, and corporate counsel good at client development can be seen as insufficiently deferential to authority. Corporations also value teamwork, and private-sector attorneys are not viewed as having this skill. Many attorneys who have made the move think in-house live offers more professional satisfaction, more intimate involvement with the client and with a whole range of legal issues.
