'White shoe': dated term for a firm; the time has come to bid farewell to an epithet that lost meaning a generation ago
Article Abstract:
The use of the term 'white shoe' to describe law firms is obsolete. These firms typically contained male lawyers with similar family backgrounds and education. Their clients generally were bankers or investors who shared this same heritage. This law firm culture slowly died as the business client population changed. The term itself, a reference to attire at these older firms, had taken on derogatory connotations as the legal profession diversified.

Article Abstract:
Law firms continue to move into the once-blighted Times Square area in NYC. The area has been transformed into safe area for lawyers and office workers. Its lower rents and other amenities are drawing firms such as Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom to move their headquarters there. In 1990, Proskauer was the first major firm to relocate to Times Square, but the redevelopment efforts and bargain rents soon drew other firms.
