Will the Maastricht Treaty create our next recession?
Article Abstract:
The Maastricht Treaty, which requires currency stability and lower government deficits in the European Union, could trigger a 1997 European recession leading, in turn, to a US economic downturn. Restraints on German monetary policy, coupled with the difficulties most countries face in meeting the currency and deficit Treaty requirements, could lead to widespread simultaneous tight monetary and budgetary policies and, ultimately, a recession. As gains from capital spending and the housing sector begin to slow, US economic expansion will be driven by exports and particularly susceptible to a recession in Europe.

Will we be able to afford the "Golden Years?"
Article Abstract:
Retirement planning is becoming increasingly difficult because employers are asking employees to contribute to their benefits, planners focus on 15 retirement years when 20 or more is likely and inflation should increase. Planners cannot expect the type of returns that have increased the value of portfolios in previous years and the returns are likely to be overcome by inflation increases. One solution is individual based retirement planning rather than government or employer, but there are problems that still need to be considered.

A new look at the economics of medicine
Article Abstract:
The growth in medical services in 1998 ended a two-year slump period. Pharmaceutical prices, physician fees, and other indicators rose significantly over 1997 levels. Analysis of medical trends, demographics, and overall economic growth lead to the conclusion that growth will continue but not at the high levels which existed prior to 1997.
