With purchase of review course, West Group bellies up to the bar
Article Abstract:
West Professional Education Group has bought Barpassers and a US District Judge on May 22, 1995, issued an important ruling on competition between bar review courses. Barpassers was the country's second-largest such course, competing with BAR/BRI, the largest at 35,000 clients and over $25 million annually. Stanley D. Chess was senior VP of BAR/BRI until Jan, when he and another top BAR/BRI executive left to join West Publishing Co, sparking new lawsuits. Chess is chairman and chief executive officer of West Professional Education Group. Meanwhile a U.S. district judge threw out a prior jury verdict asserting antitrust violations by both companies.

Less workers' comp work ahead; revamping the system may put comp lawyers on unemployment lines
Article Abstract:
The presidential health care task force would like to link health care reform with workers' compensation, treating occupational injuries and other illnesses and accidents under one program. There is no doubt that the workers' comp system is not working well. Employers complain about rapid cost escalation and employees about slow processing of their claims. Some workers' comp attorneys worry that health care reform may diminish their practices, but states which have tried to reform the workers' comp system do not seem to be putting attorneys out of work.
