Senior bar members once considered it their role to train young lawyers
Article Abstract:
Senior lawyer-mentors were at one time the chief trainers of law students, but the mentoring function seems to be falling by the wayside. The emphasis on billable hours, decline in loyalty to a firm and lack of spare time on the part of female partners to engage in mentoring are among the reasons for the practice's decline. Female and minority attorneys report special difficulty obtaining mentors. Mentors can show young attorneys proper legal etiquette, help them with technique so as to resolve a difficult dispute and let them learn legal ethics by example.

Justice Stevens' views on 'hate speech' trouble First Amendment lawyers
Article Abstract:
Justice John Paul Stevens gave the 1992 address at the Elliott inaugural lecture series on the First Amendment and favored consideration of the context of 'hate speech' in deciding its constitutionality. He alluded to the 1992 case R.A.V. v. St. Paul in which he dissented from the conservative majority's opinion that cross-burning on the lawn of a private residence constituted protected speech. Some scholars in the audience were afraid that undue contextual emphasis might diminish the law's predictability.

It is not uncommon for the government to keep informers satisfied
Article Abstract:
The 1987 federal sentencing guidelines let prosecutors decide whether or not cooperation justifies a sentence reduction motion and how much the reduction will be. The judge is left out of the picture. The prospect of seasoned criminals securing their freedom in exchange for information is unsavory at best, but the criminal justice system seems to consider it a necessary evil.
