Women's progress slows at top firms: numbers in partnership ranks do grow, but hurdles remain, and not all partners are created equal
Article Abstract:
Women have become increasingly visible at the nation's 250 largest law firms, but increases have slowed in recent years and women remain underrepresented at the partnership level. The number of women at these firms nearly doubled from 1985 to 1991, but 1991 to 1996 witnessed growth of only 5%. The number of women partners has increased, but a disproportionate number of women are non-equity partners. Some women attorneys note that mentoring and client development opportunities are less available to women.

A firm's merger can breed havoc; a New York successor firm is sued by ex-partners
Article Abstract:
The New York Supreme Court's Appellate Division ruled the law firm Whitman Breed Abbott and Morgan to be a successor to Breed, Abbott and Morgan and thus a party in an action by two former partners of the latter. The issue is whether Breed went through a dissolution or a merger with another firm. According to the partnership agreement, former partners could obtain compensation in the event of a merger, but not with a dissolution.
