According to Chris Rowley, managing director of Five TV, the newcommercial TV station Channel 5 is not expected to make significant money until the year 2000.Rowley believes that there is room for another television station, however, profits will take morethan a couple of years to appear. Five other industry specialists are interviewed on their attitudesto the new channel, including Sue Stoessl, head of broadcasting research at the BBC.

The bids

The UKTVconsortium is one of four broadcasters bidding for the Channel 5 licence. UKTV's bid totalled36,261,158 pounds sterling, and the consortium includes Scandinavian Broadcast System,CanWest Global Communications, SelecTV, and the Ten Group. Other bidders include VirginTV and Channel 5 Broadcasting, which both submitted a bid of 22,002,000 pounds; and NewCentury Television with a bid of 2 million pounds.

The Independent Television Commission has requested10 year business plans from those bidding for the new Channel 5 licence. According to TheHenley Centre, projections up until the year 2001 can be estimated credibly, however, it is moredifficult to predict after 2001. The Henley Centre predicts that the new channel will take a 5%share of viewing figures by the year 2001.
