AP takeover of WTN puts 245 jobs at risk

Associated Press (AP) is consolidating its recently acquired Worldwide Television News (WTN) with its television news agency, APTV, that is expected to reduce up to 245 posts to eliminate redundancies of positions. The merger, which will create a new firm called Associated Press Television News (APTN), will result to the elimination of 75 workers from AP and WTN's London, UK, head offices while 140 will be relocated to other offices abroad. APTN will be managed by nine senior executives including Nigel Hancock to become editorial director and Nigel Baker to become head of news.

Worldwide Television News' over 300 employees face uncertain employment status after the London, UK-based news agency has been acquired in a $55-million, or GBP33.7-million, deal by Associated Press. The acquisition prompted speculations about job displacements, with industry observers saying that redundancies were unavoidable. A Worldwide Television News insider said that workers feel betrayed by ABC News, the agency's owner. He said the workers were not updated on the deal. Associated Press Television head Stephen Claypole said no position has been made yet on redundancies.

Reuters to grow TV news service

Reuters has announced a move to substantially expand its television news services after being defeated by Associated Press over the takeover of rival Worldwide Television News. As part of the move, Reuters Television News is being offered to broadcasters in Australia and New Zealand by way of the AsiaSat satellite. Additionally, Reuters is expanding its entertainment news service by supplementing the agency's current 30-minute feeds on Thursdays with 10-minute bulletins on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
