World Service bid falls L20m short
Article Abstract:
BBC World Service has been awarded a total 30 million pounds sterling increase in grant-in-aid funding for three years by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. The grant was 20 million pounds sterling less than World Service managing director Sam Younger has requested. The shortfall might pressure World Service to close some of its foreign language radio stations. The funding that calls for an increase by five million pounds sterling to World Service's 161-million-pounds-sterling funding for 1998 to 1999, by 10 million pounds sterling in 1999 to 2000, and by 15 million pounds sterling in 2000 to 2001, will be used in the firm's investments in television and the Internet.
