Article Abstract:
Microsoft purchased internet specialist firm Web TV in April 1997 for $450 million, with the aim of using the company's technical knowledge to combine television and internet. Web TV had been taken up by 250,000 user in the US by Dec 1997, and Microsoft has announced plans to launch a trial in the UK. NetChannel produced a top box in Oct 1997, which offered the first internet television service for an initial price of 300 pounds sterling plus a monthly fee. Microsoft is investing billions of dollars in the future of television internet services.

Islandoo opens up casting call service
Article Abstract:
RDF Media-backed website Islandoo.com, which was created for Channel 4's "Shipwrecked" auditions, has launched casting calls for other television shows such as "Balls of Steel" on C4, and "K Club" and "Bizarre ER" on BBC3. The website, which was originally made to filter auditions, has evolved into a social online network with 38,000 members. The features of the website are also discussed.
